Clinical Supervision Basics: An Overview of
Supervision for Clinicians

Goal:
Participants will explore clinical supervision
and the components/ qualities of effective clinical supervision.
Participants will be introduced to the roles and responsibilities
of the supervisor, how to manage clinical vs. administrative
responsibilities. Will review Clinical Supervisor ethics and coping
with risk management. Will explore effective supervision and
guiding supervisees. How to manage different types of supervisees
as well as addressing resistance and personal biases. Discuss
Supervisor burnout and vicarious trauma.
Objectives:
· Professional Standards -
Define clinical supervision and identify the components of
supervision including the roles and responsibilities of a
supervisor, potential issues difficulties with clinical vs.
administrative supervision.
· Counselor Development -
Explore the qualities of an effective supervisory relationship/ the
supervisory alliance
· Counselor Development -
Effective supervision and how to guide the counselor with
feedback
· Supervisor Ethics (including
CCS and NBCC codes of ethics), dealing with ethical dilemmas/ risk
management
· Utilize supervision to
assessing counselor competencies
· Professional and Ethical
standards - Dealing with resistance and personal biases
· Professional and Ethical
Standards -Supervisor burnout and vicarious trauma
Schedule:
8:30am – 9am: Registration
9am – 10:20am: Define clinical supervision and
identify the components of supervision; Explore the qualities of an
effective supervisory relationship/ the supervisory alliance
10:20am – 10:35am: Break
10:35am – 11:50am: Look at the roles and
responsibilities of a supervisor as well as the differences and
potential issues/difficulties with clinical vs administrative
supervision; supervisor Ethics (including CCS and NBCC codes of
ethics), dealing with ethical dilemmas/ risk management
11:50am- 12pm: Questions and feedback
12pm-1pm: lunch
1pm – 2:20pm: Effective supervision and how to
guide supervisee; Supervising incompetence vs lack of
experiences,
2:20pm – 2:35pm: Break
2:35pm – 3:50am: Dealing with resistance and
personal biases; Supervisor burnout and vicarious trauma
3:50pm- 4pm: Questions and feedback
